
The tempting launch is national: open the doors everywhere, let the press release say "across the UK", watch the signup counter. The problem is what the tenth user in Carlisle sees: a beautiful app, zero people within thirty miles, nothing to trade. They leave, correctly, and they do not come back when you finally reach their town.
Marketplaces are local physics
A skills exchange only works if both sides of a trade are close enough to meet, which makes every town its own marketplace with its own liquidity. Twenty thousand members spread across the country is two hundred marketplaces of a hundred strangers each; two hundred members in one town is a single marketplace that actually clears. Same headcount, opposite outcome.
Proximity is also the trust engine
The other thing density buys is accountability. In a town, the person servicing your bike is someone you might see in the queue at the bakery; their reputation has to survive being local. Verified addresses, visible trade histories and local hosts all work with that grain. A national anonymous pool works against it.
What a town needs before it opens
- Around 150 to 200 waitlisted members inside a tight radius, because trades have to be worth the walk;
- at least a dozen distinct skills among them, because a town of forty photographers cannot trade with itself;
- a handful of members willing to be local hosts, welcoming newcomers and keeping early disputes human;
- and a first-week plan: seeded requests, founding-member status, and enough activity that the room is visibly alive on day one.
Amersham first
The pilot town needed to be small enough to saturate, varied enough to trade, and close enough to the team that we can be at the first awkward handover in person. Amersham fits all three, and if the model cannot work in a market town with a high street and strong community groups, it cannot work anywhere. The waitlist decides where we go after that: the map is drawn by demand, not by a spreadsheet of city sizes.
